The role of gaskets in sealing systems 

Gaskets are seals placed between two surfaces to prevent fluid or gas leakage. They are essential in automotive engines, industrial machinery, and high-pressure or high-temperature systems. 

 

Depending on their formulation, gaskets can provide chemical resistance, mechanical integrity under compression, and long-term sealing performance. 

 

The reinforcement material within the gasket compound is crucial. Mineral wool fibres provide a combination of strength and thermal stability, ensuring gaskets remain reliable even under harsh conditions.

How mineral fibres improve performance in gasket applications 

Mineral fibres enhance sealing solutions through a combination of mechanical reinforcement, thermal stability, and application reliability. Here’s how they contribute: 

Improve sealing integrity – Their structure strengthens the gasket compound, preventing cracks and maintaining compression under fluctuating pressures. 

Enhance heat resistance – Fibres withstand extreme temperatures, keeping gaskets functional in high-heat environments.

Automotive and industrial gaskets

In engines, industrial machinery, and high-pressure systems, gaskets ensure a tight seal between two surfaces and prevent leaks of gas or liquids. Without reliable gaskets, equipment efficiency drops and costly failures can occur.

We engineer our mineral fibres to reinforce these applications. Thanks to their specific structure and thermal performance, they improve:

Mineral fibres provide dimension stability at elevated temperatures. Mineral fibres can replace other reinforcing materials such as glass wool and cellulose.

Optional reinforcement with Heracron® Aramid Pulp improves mechanical bonding within the rubber matrix, supporting calendar processing and enhancing structural integrity under heat and pressure.

Gaskets for heat shields

Heat shields protect engine or industrial components from excessive heat. As engine compartments become more compact, effective thermal protection is increasingly critical.

Lapinus® RS fibres, manufactured at approximately 1500°C, are incombustible and offer high-temperature performance. They are used to produce heat-resistant materials for automotive and industrial applications, providing reliable thermal protection and mechanical stability.

Gaskets for transmission papers

In automotive transmission systems, transmission papers are used to reinforce components and ensure smooth fluid operation under high-pressure conditions. These papers are functional components within the transmission.

Stone wool fibres are increasingly used in these papers, replacing cotton, aramid, or carbon fibres, providing:

- Flexibility to withstand mechanical stress
- High thermal and chemical resistance, suitable for continuous torque transmission systems
- Long-term durability, meeting the high-energy demands of modern automotive transmissions

Heracron® Aramid Pulp

For superior mechanical bonding and improved processing, we offer Heracron® Aramid Pulp from Kolon Industries. These high-tenacity, high-modulus fibrillated aramid fibres create strong mechanical bonds in the rubber matrix, keeping fillers and short fibres together. This gives the gasket mix the cohesion and strength required during calendar processing under high pressure and temperature.

Aramid pulp is a form of aramid fiber that is processed into a fibrous, pulp-like material. Like other aramid fibers, Heracron® Aramid Pulp is valued for its high strength, low weight, and resistance to impact, fire, and chemicals, making it suitable for use in applications like gaskets, transmission papers and heat shields materials.
